Rockland Through Time
Donald Cann
Formed in 1874 after a contentious split with the mother town of Abington, Rockland boomed in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The country's most stylish shoes came from factories on the side streets - Emerson, Hurley Brothers, Just Wright Shoe - and sold at retail stores on the town's main thoroughfare, Union Street. At its peak, Rockland had it all, two large, competitive banks, signature business blocks, bold, beautiful churches, a Carnegie library and so much more. When Rockland was king, there was no place better to be.
