Kathleen, a distraught well-known pianist, flees to the New Mexico wilderness to escape her violent and obsessed young lover Dorian. While staying with a friend at the remote Silver Cloud Ranch, an irresistible attraction develops between her and a French artist, Count Jean-Luc Salicetti, much to the dismay of Jean-Luc's unbalanced American wife Isadora, whom he had met ten years ago in very romantic circumstances in Paris, France.
