Overcome by horror, guilt and fear in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, Detective Amanda Ross finds herself unable to return to the job. Things only get worse with the arrival of her 30th birthday, as her neighbor is killed in an explosion-leaving Amanda severely hurt and the woman's young son without a mother. Yet a heartfelt request from reclusive rock star Mitch Black, and a burning desire to find the boy's long-absent father, drives Amanda to get off her ass and back into the world. In making that journey, she meets Jeannie, a comely grad student and computer instructor-whose lesson plan might just include a field trip to Amanda's heart.
