In ACES HIGH, one question lingers in your mind. Who or what is killing our government officials? The story opens with the death of Mike Ryan, a U. S. Congressman. Brenner Sands, a senator, has the unpleasant task of announcing the bad news to the other members of the Aces High Club, a group of politicians who meet weekly to play poker. They are shocked when another congressman dies suddenly at Mike's funeral. After performing autopsies on both men, the coroner informs everyone that they died from natural causes. This does not ease the fear of a few who think one of them could be next. After one of the poker games Brenner startles his fellow members when he announces his plans to run for president as an independent. Even though they feel it is impossible for an independent to win, they agree to help with his campaign. On the way back home Brenner stops at a secluded motel and meets someone with whom he is having a secret affair. He returns home at 3 a.m. and confronts his wife, Jennie, who accuses him of having an affair. Her suspicions intensify when her husband rejects her in bed. The story continues with a well-organized campaign conducted by Brenner and his supporters. Will Brenner be the first independent president? They will all find out soon. Meanwhile, more mysterious deaths of politicians close to Brenner occur. An intense investigation reveals some intriguing discoveries which lead to a startling conclusion.
