Committed Worship: a Sacramental Theology for Converting Christians : Volume 1, Adult Conversion and Initiation
Donald L. Gelpi
Volume I, "Adult Conversion and Initiation," elaborates a new theological construct for understanding the forms and dynamics of adult Christian conversion. It gives concrete examples of how such conversion happens and discusses the seven dynamics that unify all five forms of conversion (affective, intellectual, personal moral, socio-political, and Christian). The theology of conversion provides the context for discussing both the restored catechumenate and the revised rites of adult Christian initiation. A historical survey of the catechumenate concludes with practical suggestions about the structuring the RCIA and with a reflection on the challenges it poses for the renewal of parishes and other religious communities. This volume concludes with a detailed analysis of the three sacraments of adult initiation: baptism, confirmation, and first communion. In the course of a detailed theological commentary on the revised rites, the author offers an orthodox but ecumenically sensitive explanation of the meaning of these sacramental rites.
