Barnett's earlier work was collected in THE RESTING BELL. As Kalck writes in his introduction, "The poems [in this volume] are like this resting bell: it is not that they are silent, they do sound, but in a different way, they are turned upward like such a type of bell, making a specific sound and sense, struck on the rim, instead of the rhyme."
