Divine Betrayal is Graceann K. Deters story, growing up in a very strict fundamentalist family and navigating a maze of fanaticism, love, pride and guilt, in a provincial village in the southern part of Brazil. The title, Divine Betrayal, describes what life was like for Graceann from the sexual abuse she endured, at the age of six by a trusted missionary, to the "closed" religious system she was obliged to follow. Graceann was not permitted to question her parent's faith for fear of rejection by her father and worse, the promise of eternal damnation. Divine Betrayal is a coming of age story in an exotic land where murder, prostitution, sexual abuse and death were as common as salt. Graceann's story is told through the eyes of a young girl as she grows to become a woman. Even though Graceann's childhood was filled with religion, this is not a preachy book.
