This is part four of a series of booklets about the history of Hatfield in Hertfordshire. Part 4 is the history of Newate Street. The estate owner has been the dominant factor in this area for six hundred years, so this brief history is largely the story of the men and women who have owned or tenanted the estates of Ponsbourne and Tolmers. When this series of booklets was published 50 years ago, it was rightly regarded as an exceptionally authoritative and informative work. It has since remained unchallenged as the primary source of reference for anyone interested in the history of Hatfield. Recognising its enduring value, members of Hatfield Local History Society have undertaken this reissue now including a comprehensive index.
