The purpose of this paper is to show that whether performed by military bandsmen or civilians, music of all types has been a part of the nation's musical foundation and a key component in wartime successes. The research methodology for the thesis was historical, exploring how military commanders, presidents and the United States government have consistently utilized the power of music to inspire dedication, pride, patriotism, and action in the members of the armed forces and the nation that supports them. The time period researched includes all of America's major wars from the American Revolution to the present. This thesis further explores how the United States and enemy nations have utilized music as a highly effective propaganda tool. Finally, recommendations on how American military bands should be utilized more effectively to promote troop morale, and increase public awareness and understanding of the armed forces, will be given. The thesis will assert strongly that music, particularly performed by military bands, remains a powerful component in America's ability to fight and win future wars.
