This study mines the Vindolanda tablets for evidence of economic activity, investigating its range and scale, and asking how it should be characterised as an economic model. Three different kinds of economic behaviour are investigated, namely market exchange, redistribution and reciprocity, and a concluding synthesis explores how they interact and overlap to form a complex system, defined by the specific circumstances of Vindolanda.
