Commonwealth Trust is a story about Dean Michaels, a brilliant third year law student who is working with Leo Barry, Boston's most prominent criminal attorney. Michaels is the son of a minister gunned down for his efforts to counsel a member of an organized crime family out West. The relationship between Barry and Michaels is altered when Barry changes his long standing policy of not representing members of organized crime by taking on a new client, Nicholas Buontempo, Junior, the son of the aging head of the New England crime family. The story begins with the arrest of Junior for the murder of Alessio Trillo, a long time yet disgruntled underling of the elder Buontempo. Barry and Clifford McDougall, the overzealous Attorney General struggling to save his job while in the throws of a hotly contested reelection campaign, confront each other inside and out of the courtroom. This legal thriller has many unexpected turns as Michaels uncovers the truth behind the murder conspiracy and learns that there is more to practicing law than he will ever learn in law school.
