This story is about some of the adventures of Peewee, an Oklahoma quarter horse raised in the early 1900's, and the boy, as told from Peewee's point of view. Peewee and the boy roamed the area of Oklahoma near their home fishing, hunting and getting into mischief with their friend, an unusual Indian going by the name Alfred. These stories take them from an Oklahoma cattle drive to an investigation of mysterious Indian mounds that glow with ghostly blue lights. They are tales of a country that has all but vanished. A time when there were only a few fences, children were watched over by the whole community, and a real Indian could be a boy's friend. A time when children had a freedom to explore the world around them that is impossible in today's over crowded and over-regulated society. The book begins with Peewee as a colt running wild with his mother, and their capture. Pewee is given to the boy who is told he can keep the horse if he trains him within one year. It tells about how Peewee, through misadventures involving both Peewee and the boy, the horse is broken and how the boy and Peewee become friends. Then it tells some of the many adventures of Peewee and the boy with Alfred, an unusual Indian who takes the boy under his wing and teaches him about the world around him. Peewee finds that he usually learns something too. The book ends with Peewee and the boy participating in a cattle drive for a family friend and with Alfred, Peewee and the boy investigating amysterious Indian burial site.
