Standing Tall: Doing Justice in Time of War is the story of a boy whose father dies when he is thirteen years of age, and the meaning he ascribes to this event. His journey through twelve years of seminary studies culminates in his ordination to the priesthood. The connection between celibacy and action on behalf of justice lead him to volunteer for an assignment in El Salvador. He works with his Jesuit colleagues for a persecuted church that is misunderstood by the Vatican and feared by policy-makers in the United States. The courage and commitment of the Salvadoran people, along with the Salvadoran Church's pastoral plan based on the' preferential option for the poor take him on many adventures, both within the Central American region and within his own mind and heart.
