A romantic story of love triumphing. This the fifth book, continuing the lives and loves of the two Carroll families, descendents of protestant David Carroll and Roman Catholic Edgar Carroll, continuing the Carroll Family Saga, as the United States expands after the Louisiana Purchase. Now many new emigrants desiring to settle and occupy the lands of Texas and California at present belonging to Mexico.

The dream to extend the United States from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean, establishing their families on this new land in spite of indian attacks and Mexican opposition. The requirement to improve the present means of transport with ship and steam boat building, demanded by the growing industrial potential leading to new roads, canals and even railways.

Yet it is essentially a story of romantic love and lovers of those, already there, but new emigrants, such as Gordon Taylor and Sheila McLean coming from Britain, Otto Fallon from Germany, and the Ibsen's from Scandinavia. Donald Reid, Hanz Eliot, and Karl Downey all descendents of Margaret Eliot of |Ireland, but finding love with a young Mormon wife, Rachael Gilbert and the others with Elvira Luna and Raquel Garcia in Mexico. The ambition of Mexican President Santa Anna leading to the Battle of the Alamo and others as he enjoyed his licentious life with many women. Trying to expel all Americans from his country.

How Charlotte and Roy Marshall with Fay Le Saye expanded their investments in shipping and railways, helped the romance of engineer Gordon Taylor, whilst their relative, Donald Reid courted his Rachael finally establishing his own company in San Francisco.

All events are historically accurate but the story is about love and lovers as the United States craves for new space for its inhabitants.
