The Enamored Tutor: Opera is the Lifeblood of the Wealthy Milanese

Setting: Milan, Italy in 1856 The Alpine countryside, the gothic cathedral-Duomo, a 14th century castle, palatial gardens and Lago di Como are places where the characters express love. Intricately woven through the pages is the spirit of revolution and Italy's quest for independence from Austrian rule. This is the story of a promising composer, Roberto Sardona who wants to become as famous as Verdi. His greatest aspiration is to write that one great opera. Gianni Despardi, the mayor of the district of Brera, hires Roberto to tutor his daughter so she can get accepted into the conservatory of music. The composer develops amorous feelings for his precious protégé, but is tormented by his selfish desire to stay "kept" by his wealthy Austrian lover. The bond between the two creative spirits prevails. With help from her beloved mentor, Carlotta Despardi is destined to become Milan's greatest diva. Childhood memories of watching her mother play classical music on a black baby grand, as well as remembering her Italian nana speak about life back in Italy, inspired the author to write this novel.
