Who was Walter James Devlin?
He was a charismatic six foot five hustler who survived a rough childhood. He was abandoned by his dad who left behind any number of poor role models. His early life was dominated by his ability to play a game. He trusted that basketball could lead him to a wonderful life. His ultimate defeat was sealed by how he dealt with adversity. He could give logical reasons for turning to gambling. He talked about analgesics and endorphins. He evolved into an expert on scientific psychobabble. He understood and lamented that gambling distracted him from his real problems. Corky clung to memories and hated his weakness. Gambling grew into the hideous mask, which bound his other problems.
