The 1956 revolution for the Hungarian people and neighboring countries brought about decades of communist rule. Many there fought, and died for freedom.

The story begins in Veszprem, Hungary with the Liszt family, local aristocrats, who are preparing to entertain a large group of friends and high ranking officials, in honor of Saint Stephen's Crown. When tragedy strikes, last minute decisions are made which change the lives of the countess, Katherine Liszt, and her young grandson John forever.

After escaping Hungary at the onset of the revolution, Katherine and John make their way to Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States. Once again though, unforeseen tragedy striks soo after their arrival and young John is forced to leave the home and friends he has come to love only to be faced with starting his life in America over again.
