This story is set in the Lake District of Northern England, in the small village of Ambleside. It is late morning and a boy is daydreaming as he walks up the main road on which the annual rushbearing parade will take place in the mid-afternoon. A car's horn suddenly startles him back to reality, and he decides to calm his nerves with a walk by Rothay River. While at the river's edge, he tries to catch a fish, but accidentally falls into the fast flowing and chilly river. An unexpected rescuer appears and offers him a chance to save his life, but at what cost?
