Some Place Called North tells the story of three generations of the Boles family from slavery to the late 1960's. Herbert, a former slave, returns to Jacobville, Mississippi after the Civil War, and is given fifty acres of his former owner's property, but constantly fights with the towns only merchant, and the Klan to keep the land. At the age of 15, Herbert's son Jim was sent to the Mississippi State Prison for the crime of hitting a White woman. When he was released in 1889, he started the long journey to a place that everyone called North, but only to get run over by five hooded men with torches who left him to die wounded and out of food. While sitting beside the road waiting for death to come, Jim was awakened by 60 year old Prophet Josh Grady, a self appointed faith healer who didn't like women, and constantly beat and belittled his young wife Norma. When Josh refused to have a relationship with Norma, a flame became a blaze between her and Jim, and a son, Peter, was born.
