Sylvia Hewitt's husband was killed in the war with America. When she finds an injured man with his exact appearance in her barn, she finds the compassion to take him in and give him care. Trained in herbal medicine, Sylvia is able to heal the man. But strange men start arriving at her home, and she must find a way to hide the man from men who want to kill him. As an outcast of the nearest village, Sylvia is able to convince the people her husband returned from war and is ill. But, there is a few problems with this falsehood, first Sylvia is unnerved by the man who is her dead husband's doppelganger, second, she is falling in love with him, and third, there are men who want him dead.
