Wolf Masterson had come into the Saddle River country a quarter of a century back and had carved himself an empire, running his stock widely over open range. Long since he had come to believe implicitly that wherever his cattle roamed, the land was his. Therefore he resented the homesteaders with ever-increasing bitterness.

So did Stumpy Garford, a puncher on Wolf's spread, though Stumpy didn't approve of backing up his boss' play with gunfire unless absolutely necessary. However, when Tom Bannack tried to use trickery and force to bring the ranchers to heel, Stumpy showed he was afraid neither of battle smoke nor of the machinations of desperate men.
