Sir Walter Elliot, lives with his daughters Elizabeth and Anne. His third daughter is married to Charles Musgrove of nearby Uppercross Hall, the heir to a respected local squire.

After Lady Elliot's death fourteen years ago, the Elliots have accumulated debt steadily because of their lavishly overspending father and now is in financial trouble, needing to reduce expenses. So they intend to rent their family estate, Kellynch Hall and the family will settle in Bath until finances improve, and to maintain a dignified lifestyle.

They soon find first-class tenants to rent their home; Admiral and Mrs. Croft are wealthy and well-mannered Navy people.

Mrs. Croft is the sister of the man whom Anne loves. Eight years back, she was betrothed to this naval officer, Captain Frederick Wentworth, but Lady Russell, her friend, persuaded her that Captain Wentworth was not a good and worthy match, and Anne called off the engagement. With the Crofts at Kellynch, Anne hopes to see Captain Wentworth again and...

All the suspense of the novel revolves around one question: Will Anne and Wentworth be reunited and get married?

Jane Austen's wonderful and brilliant skill for delicate observation on social custom, people, marriage, English manners, etc. is clearly felt in her last finished work, Persuasion.

As always she is witty and superbly sarcastic.
