Spies On The Loose

Jason Tirrell is a man who has enjoyed many loves, but when he leaves the SIS and settles down in an idyllic rural life, his mind is more set on acquiring a wife to go with his new name than in dodging bullets, but finds himself at the heart of a series of murders at a nearby residential home. A knock on his door introduces him to Thea Prewett, a detective sergeant with golden auburn hair and blue eyes, and it is a case of instant love, rather than helping with inquiries. The mounting toll impedes the affair, and as Jason rushes off to buy a ring, Thea heads for France following a clue. In France, the trail goes back forty years to the war and exposes further murders and treason, and discloses that one of the victims in England is still revered as a modern-day Jeanne d'Arc who fought with the Maquisards in Provence and killed an English SOE traitor. Thea pursues another traitor who leads the story back to England and a mystery concerning a Mount near Jason's home which also appears to hold a secret connected to the residential home murders. A lot of deceit is uncovered in the course of further murders, explosions, car chases and a boat search on the Medway that ends in a shoot-out, and answers many puzzles.
