It is 2137 and Zephyr Strabane lives in a nearly singular world, with physically implanted communication devices now being mandatory, and music performed by humans is illegal. Working at a pool cleaning service with his mentor Hank, Zeph has so far avoided getting the "Wares" implanted into his body, using his exemption as a "religious worker" (the caretaker of a hidden pool in the basement of an ex-girlfriend's church). With limited time as being off-the-grid, he visits old friends and relatives, pondering what's-to-come amid his final adventures. Zephyr is an elusive, yet charismatic young man who lives in the perhaps-not-too-far-off future, in a society torn between the overflow of technology and the dwindling resources needed for bulk transportation. Having avoiding getting the required and highly invasive software implanted into his body, he finally runs out of places to hide. The magic of the technology is underscored by the science of a visiting celestial element, further splitting society into disparaging views on how to proceed. He tells us first hand of his journeys while confronting the changing forces in the physical and virtual worlds, as well as from the edge of supernatural plausibility.
