This is the second book "Puberty" and continues with the exploits of a young fireman in the 1960's. In 1963 Michael Edward Fairn joined a Northern City County Borough Fire Brigade (after his 'Probation' period as described in Book One). His development continues in this edition by being accepted by the older firemen and eventually learning to drive first line appliances, 'Red Machines'. There are graphic descriptions of many incidents he attends, including a fire in a brothel, a house totally destroyed by an explosion and many incidents of large mill fires, so prevalent in those days. Michael also encounters strong resistance with his girl-friend's father, which after many months concludes in the final chapter. This is work of 'faction' and any resemblance to particular people or places is purely coincidental. (86,249 words)
