Stem cells are the cells with the unique ability to differentiate into specialized cell types. The bone marrow, blood and adipose tissue are the three known accessible sources of adult stem cells in humans. Such adult stem cells are of use in various medical therapies for the treatment and prevention of diseases or conditions. Bone marrow transplant is the most common stem-cell therapy. Research is being done to apply stem-cell treatments for the management of neurodegenerative diseases, heart disease, diabetes, etc. Alternative sources of stem cells and innovative techniques for generating organoids using stem cells are being explored.
