When a six year old child has to have his arm amputated in the 1800's, he is determined that the word "disabled" will not apply to him. Through raw determination, and major life obstacles, Daniel finds a way to maneuver through his ninety-eight years here on earth by not just surviving, but by living a full and rewarding life. A Confederate soldier gives a three-year old Daniel a colt to raise at his home in Texas. He never forgets that act of kindness, and in return, spends many of his years giving to others, including orphaned children. He endures loss after loss, but continues to make the most of his life. Daniel loved a girl from the time that he was a young child, but he was denied the opportunity to spend his life with her. Because of his passionate love for Clarissa, this relationship will present him with temptation, and cause him to sin, without regret. This flawed, but honorable man tries his best to protect his children, but he never finds out about some family secrets, including a violent attack on one of his children. One secret would have meant the world to Daniel, but it is bravely kept from him.
