Breakaway Days is an attempt at America-picaresque, a young American's road, city and foreign territory, story remembered several decades later, violence-light given that nearly all of the novel's recalled time-frame is the 1950's for a young adult's hasty introduction to adventuring, to many of life's wins and unavoidable losses. So, starting as a nineteen year-old stuck in the particulars of a sport (Baseball), of his being a dreamer without a conclusive dream, plus his having concerns about "the Draft," and of what a meaningful life should consist of, Breakaway Days protagonist encounters the unexpected and finds numerous illusions kept and many illusions shredded. . . Readers may be reminded of Twain's Huck Finn were Huck nearing his 20's, of Hemingway's Nick Adams tales, and the writings of Jack London, being surprised, however, by the outcomes.
