In her last book, How Paul Duped Rome, DS Waggoner illustrates how the birth narratives of Jesus were just ambiguous enough to be able to be interpreted two opposite ways. To a Jew, the birth narratives could be saying Jesus was the son of Joseph biologically, making Jesus a natural descendant of King David through King Solomon, which is exactly what Jews have been looking for in their messiah. Yet to Gentiles, who are not as schooled in Jewish law and tradition, the birth narratives could be interpreted to be saying Jesus was not the son of Joseph biologically, but through adoption. The question is, why would the authors of the New Testament leave something as important as Jesus' lineage open to interpretation, when on the other hand, they detailed in excruciating detail Jesus' death, burial and resurrection? None of that matters to a Jew, if in fact, Jesus was not legally eligible for the throne by having a natural father traced to King David through King Solomon. So, why all the ambiguity?
