The classic folktale of Hansel and Gretel is retold for early readers. Because they are so poor, Hansel and Gretel's stepmother convinces their father to leave them deep in the woods. While lost, they happen upon a little cottage made of candy, but the little old woman who lives inside is a wicked old witch who likes to eat children! When the witch puts Hansel in a cage and tries to fatten him up, Gretel pushes the witch into an oven. Hansel and Gretel make it back home safely and as their stepmother has died, they live happily ever after. This is a traditional telling of the Brothers Grimm tale. For grades 1-2, 24 pages.
