The Island of Doctor Moreau
H G Wells
Written in 1896 and published the following year. It was published in Italian for the first time in 1900 by the National Publishing Company with the title The Island of the Beasts and later published also as The Island of Terror and The Island of Dr. Moreau. dward Prendick was shipwrecked following a terrible ship accident in the Pacific, and is rescued by a small vessel, commanded by an alcoholic captain, on which exotic animals are transported. On the boat he knows the mysterious Montgomery and his deformed and inhuman servant, M'ling. Still confused and exhausted because of the shipwreck, Prendick is forced to follow Montgomery on his landing on an island of volcanic origin, on which the animals are also disembarked. Once arrived and left alone on the island coasts, the trio of men is welcomed by strange men who arouse in Prendick feelings of curiosity and abomination together. Having reached a complex house made of wood and also composed of a fence, Edward Prendick discovers that someone is vivisecting animals, and soon meets the famous Dr. Moreau, a skilled doctor and scientist specialized in vivisection science. The man flees, struck by an emotional shock, and runs into a crowd of monstrous men-beasts who almost kill him.
