In contemporary New York, fashion designer Alexandra "Lexi" Constantine is distraught after her older sister Susannah died in a car accident. Lexi wakes from a dream in which Susannah's soul reveals she has not gone to Heaven but is stuck in a foreboding dark Void. Lexi visits Tamara Reeves, a powerful medium, who speaks with Susannah's spirit and is told that because Susannah is an atheist, she cannot get into Heaven. To free Susannah from the Void and convince her to believe in God, Lexi enlists the help of Reverend Hawthorne, a mortician comfortable around the dead, and Detective Ferguson Redington. The detective is investigating Susannah's accident as a homicide and her connections with a drug smuggling case involving auctions of high-end antiques.



As Lexi participates in Tamara's séance that transfers Susannah's wandering soul to a terrestrial ghost bound to a child's toy, the meandering plot diverges into superfluous side stories on demon possession, cartoon gangsters, and a mole in the police department.
