It's a title that could put some people off. If we look at what each part of the name means, it will make a lot more sense.

'Neuro' - the brain, with which we receive and filter information through our five senses

'Linguistic' refers to interpret experience through language, including body language, images, sounds, feelings, tastes, and smells

'Programming' is the part that puts some people off for the wrong reasons, as they associate it with brainwashing - they're thinking, "I don't want to be programmed"! Conversely, the same term may attract some people in for the wrong reasons (usually, it has to be said, intense young men who aren't in relationships) who are thinking "Programming people! Cool!"

The truth is not that sinister. 'Programming' refers to the way we construct personal 'programs', analogous to computer programs, of thought, communication, and behavior.




So Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is the study of how we think and communicate, with ourselves and with others, and of how we can use this to get the results we want.
