While You Are Away is written from the standpoint of a child remembering the activities he shared with his father prior to his father's deployment overseas. This perspective shows how the memories forged between the parent and his child in the time leading to the parents' departure enables the child to remember his missing parent.

This book, while written from the perspective of a military child, can so easily fit into any family unit where a parent leaves the home for an extended period of time. It shows how important the child's memories are to them as they grow and cope with the parents' absence; looking forward to their parents return and the building of new memories.

This book can easily relate to any family situation; be it military, police, firefighter, medical or civil defense families or any type of family where on parent or the other leaves or is deployed from the home for an extended period of time. The family and especially the children left behind will be able to remember these dreams and memories of the past time spent with their parent as they await their return. In doing so, it shows these children are not alone throughout their parents' absence. They carry the memories of past adventures with them in their minds and hearts until that parent returns to create new and lasting memories.
