Nearly taking the skin off her knuckles Isabel opens a long forgotten suitcase stuck in the loft and discovers a pile of letters received from hopeful international pen pals. Penned during the years of Isabel's teenage she wonders if these girls, now women, are leading the lives they'd had planned for themselves at age 14. Isabel certainly wasn't. The last decade of her biological clock on rapid countdown Isabel remains single and devoid of motherhood. Fastened to a job that plays no part of a noteworthy career, Isabel comes to the realisation that she could use these freedoms to her advantage. Unpenned tells the events and happenings after Isabel decides to reunite with some of these old pen pals, travelling from her hometown in south-east London to the edges of the Pacific, the screen-saver idylls of tropical islands and beyond. Isabel witnesses the similarities and differences in the lives of these other women, liberating her from her own disappointments and revealing new ideas for a different future.
