The 19th century was an era in which many Americans struggled with the realities of settling and living in a continent that remained only partway charted. On many occasions, particularly in the westernmost regions, the prayers ask for nothing but the most basic provisions of survival.

After completing his service in the American Civil War, Daniel Webster Whittle spent decades on evangelistic tours. He associating closely with his friend and fellow Christian author, Dwight Lyman Moody - indeed, it was Moody who first encouraged Whittle to enter upon evangelism as his life's work. Together the two believers encouraged many Christians with words, although Whittle is perhaps best known for writing over 200 hymns - several of the most popular examples are still sung in churches to this day.
