William Stainton Moses discusses his abilities as a spiritual medium, and chronicles how he discovered he could communicate with spirit presences manifest in various planes of existence.

By the time he authored this revelatory manual, William Stainton Moses had been communing with spirit forces for many years. The accumulated knowledge of such affinity with beings beyond our own world is shared in this book, which comprises thirty-three lectures on various topics. In general, they seek to dispel myth and advance knowledge of the spirit world. As a Christian cleric, the author makes effort to reconcile his belief in Christianity with the existence of spirits.

The characteristics and behaviors of the spirits are identified and detailed by the author, who determines that many such entities wish to communicate messages to humans on the mortal coil. The medium's process of automatic writing - using a pen and paper to quickly ascribe communications from spirits - is also mentioned.

Active in encouraging research of spiritual phenomena, Stainton Moses would offer seances as a professional medium in London. Through the 1870s and 1880s these activities were a popular trend, with many attendees impressed by the results. Detractors however noted that Stainton Moses would strictly control the conditions in which he performed his seances, and disallowed independent researchers from observing the process.

In all, this book offers an insightful account of how one of England's most famous spiritualist mediums undertook the practice.
