Portraits de Victor Berard
S. Basch
Victor Berard (1864-1931) was one of France's greatest Homeric scholars, author of a celebrated translation of the Odyssey. His attempts to reconstruct Odysseus' voyage remain as famous as his philological works. A member of the French School at Athens and director of the Ecole pratique des hautes etudes, where he taught ancient geography, he was also a thoughtful and courageous observer of contemporary events: a Dreyfusard in France and a defender of the Armenians in the Ottoman Empire. This collection of essays, intended as an intellectual biography that takes a range of different perspectives, and which brings together ancient and contemporary historians, is the first to honour the memory of a remarkable witness of his time.
