Language Maintenance: Language Maintenance Among Oromo Speakers in Addis Ababa Mesfin Wodajo

The intention of this book is to present the sociolinguistic and linguistic aspects of Oromo language maintenance in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. The sociolinguistic aspect deals with : language use, language attitude, language proficiency, and language maintenance efforts. And the linguistic aspect deals with code switching and borrowing. This perspective is used to provide a linguistic evidence in order to support the sociolinguistic findings. The issue of language maintenance in a sociolinguistic context of a socio-politically dominant language is an interesting subject to deal with as far as the descipline of sociolinguistics is concerned. In line with this, the writer of this book is interested to study the status of the language under focus within the context of Amharic, the national official language of Ethiopia, dominance in the city.
