The phenomenon of sudden job loss (SJL) has existed in the Cayman Islands and globally for decades. This work seeks to understand the emotions that are experienced, and how individuals cope with this life- altering event. A qualitative approach was used to explore and understand the phenomenon of SJL, and the study is presented as a qualitative phenomenological study using a psychological approach. Data collected were analyzed using content and cross case analysis from which themes emerged. The findings show a mixture of emotions among participants, which were at times heightened by various factors. Coping strategies were undertaken with an overall positive approach. Three themes were identified from discussions of coping strategies, and three others emerged during the interviews. Implications for pastoral counseling are also presented, including assessment of the client's emotional state to uncover suicidal or homicidal tendencies. This reading will be helpful to those who experience the trauma of job loss, as well as counselors who provide support and encouragement.
