The West Eifel volcanic field comprises 240 volcanoes and covers an area of 600 km² between Ormont at the border to Belgium, and Bad Bertrich at the Moselle River. The Feuerberg scoria-lapilli cone complex is located within the central part of the West Eifel volcanic field, c. 350 m southeast of Hohenfels-Essingen. The volcaniclastics formed by migrating vents during five major eruptive stages reflect dominantly lava spray eruptions of strombolian type. An additional hydroclastic unit within the tephra deposits indicates a temporary change of a generally pyroclastic eruptive character towards more explosive phreatomagmatic eruptions. The ascent of magma in this region is facilitated by the tectonic stress field which resulted in the formation of numerous eruptive centres, among those the pyroclastic Feuerberg scoria-lapilli cone.
