To meet the demand of iron, an essential factor for growth, mycobacteria synthesize cell associated compounds called mycobactins to grow in iron restricted conditions. Mycobacterium avium subsp paratuberculosis is unable to synthesize required amount of mycobactin and require exogenous mycobactin.
