In 1997, Uganda introduced free Universal Primary Education(UPE)whose impact on access was unprecedented. With increased enrollment came a serious challenge on the quality of education offered due to inadequate mechanism put in place to monitor school activities. Needless to mention is the importance of an effective inspection mechanism through which both teachers and school management can be supported to deliver quality education. Unfortunately, there has been general dissatisfaction with the impact of school inspection on school improvement in Uganda. The ineffective approach to school inspection implemented is not only discrediting the inspection system, but also frustrating efforts by the government, development partners and other stakeholders in ensuring quality education provision to Ugandan children. This book, therefore, sets to make an assessment of Uganda's school inspection system, its impact on the teaching and learning processes and overall education provision. It highlights various challenges to its effectiveness and explores possible remedies. This book is especially useful to education professionals and any one else who has interest in education quality improvement.
