Fish farming management at the Songhai center of SAVALOU
Michel Agodji
The Songhai Center has expertise in sustainable agriculture, with integration at all levels. African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) and Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) are the species raised at the Center. The main activities carried out during this internship are: fish feeding, fisheries and stock management. These activities allowed us to develop professional and personal skills such as self-discipline and rigor. The diagnosis revealed that fish farming is a profitable activity at the Songhai Center in Savalou. The feeding of fish with maggots already allows the farm to reduce production costs. The major problem affecting the performance of the fish farming section of the center is the lack of water control. This problem stems from the incomplete development of the site. The solution identified is the acquisition of solar pumps by the Center, in order to ensure a constant supply of water to the breeding structures. A research proposal has been developed to further study cost reduction strategies in fish farming.
