The ordinary colonial justice system and the attempted republican coup attempt

The participation of Count de la Vega del Ren in colonial public affairs a few years before the end of Spanish domination allowed him to assume an ambiguous political stance both for the Spanish authorities who distrusted him and the Creole conspirators who shared certain pro-independence ideals during the difficult years 1809-10. Likewise, the attempted coup d'état against President Augusto B. Leguía in May 1909 was one of the most violent political episodes in the Peruvian Republic. This event systematized a series of divergences, struggles and fights between civilists, democrats and liberals initiated a year earlier, which were strengthened by the social unrest resulting from the scarcity of work as a result of the economic recession of the beginning of the century and the growing Asian immigration that showed problems of overcrowding and insecurity. In this sense, we will analyze two historical events that have been little addressed in Peruvian historiography.
