In December 1981, a battalion of Salvadoran soldiers trained by the United States Army entered the Mozote where they murdered hundreds of women, men, and children. While the massacre was reported in the United States with photographs and other evidence, the government quickly dismissed it as propaganda. It wasn't until 1993 when Mark Danner published his legendary story in the New Yorker "The Truth About El Mozote," that journalists and politicians in the United States became aware of the gravity of events that occurred more than a decade earlier.
