El Libro de erudición poética (1611), de Luis Carrillo y Sotomayor es el texto que mejor describe los principios del culteranismo. Según Carrillo, los lectores cultos y minuciosos deberían interpretar, con extrema paciencia, las referencias y metáforas del texto en una y otra lectura. Cabe añadir que no se trataba de «oscurecer» la literatura, sino que se suponía que ésta era «oscura» debido a su profundidad.
