She is a sociologist and geographer. And wrote her PhD thesis on labour market policy in the Netherlands and the role of government and social partners (2000). Her areas of expertise include comparative labour market policy reform, governance and implementation research of labour market and welfare state institutions. Since the 1990s she participates in international networks, such as the Transitional Labour Markets network (TLM.net), and has carried out research for the OECD. Contributor Bio: Westerveld, Mies Mies Westerveld is Associate Professor of Labour Law at the Hugo Sinzheimer Institute of the University of Amsterdam. She wrote a PhD on the evolution of old-age and death pension schemes in social security. Her publications cover many aspects of social security legislation, such as sickness and disability schemes, and the place of care within a system of social insurance. At the moment she is focusing on the legal consequences of privatisation, in full or in part, of what had been a public insurance scheme. Her interest in this topic is political as well as scientific: since 2003 she has been a Member of the House of Lords for the Social Democratic Party, the Pvda.
