A man and his fiancée, aboard the ship Albatross, were abandoned by the ship's crew, who took the remaining lifeboats. After building a raft, they escaped from the sinking vessel and found an apparently abandoned ship in a nearby lagoon, covered with a fungus-like growth ... William Hope Hodgson's classic tale of moldy horror has been filmed twice. In 1958 it was adapted for the television series "Suspicion" as "Voice in the Night." The episode was directed by Arthur Hiller, and starred James Coburn, Patrick Macnee, and Barbara Rush. In 1963 the story was turned into the Japanese cult classic "Matango," also known as "Attack of the Mushroom People." That version was directed by the legendary Ishirô Honda of Godzilla fame.
