Vaninka is the proud and haughty daughter of General Count Tchermaylof. First indifferent to the love the young soldier Foedor has for her, she falls under his spell when he returns crowned with glory following his prowess in Italy in the war against France. Despite his friendship for the young man, the count could not grant him the hand of his daughter because he was engaged with the son of the Emperor's private adviser. Vaninka does not care and receives him secretly from his father. But the count is warned by Grégoire, a slave who seeks revenge on her, and one evening goes to see her unexpectedly. She only has time to hide Foedor in a chest, in which he dies for lack of air.
